  • Explainers deep in the site, on the narrow sub-question that the ranking page mentions in passing and never resolves.

A useful test before writing: what fact will be on this page that is not already on page one of the results? If the honest answer is nothing, the page is commodity content. It may still rank on domain strength, and it will not be quoted, because there is no reason to prefer it.

Authority Outranks Credentials

The same dataset carries a second finding that is uncomfortable and worth stating plainly. In health queries, one of the five most cited domains was a career and jobs platform. Academic and medical journals took 0.48 percent of citations. National health institutions took 0.39 percent. Sources with no medical accuracy standard at all accounted for 65.55 percent.

The mechanism is not that engines prefer amateurs. It is that a retrieval layer is not verifying credentials at all. It is selecting sources that are easy to parse, easy to justify and safe to cite at scale. Legibility plus domain signals beat pedigree, because pedigree is not one of the inputs.

For a normal business this is good news and should be said as such: institutional standing is not the barrier to entry. Operational authority is buildable, and it is built from coverage at depth on one topic, real signals, and pages a model can quote without effort.

Do not repeat this finding as "expertise does not matter". Expertise matters for the human reading the page, for whether they convert, and for every regulated-claims rule you are bound by. It is simply not what the retrieval layer is measuring.

What to Do First, and What to Ignore

Ordered by impact, not by sequence. The cost of getting the first item wrong is that everything below it produces nothing.

  1. 1.Confirm you are in the pool at all. If AI crawlers cannot reach the site, or the pages are not indexed deeply, nothing below matters. This is a thirty second check and it is skipped constantly.
  2. 2.Diagnose which failure mode you are in. Weak domain with volume, or strong domain with brochures. The remedies are unrelated and doing the wrong one costs a quarter.
  3. 3.Audit your top ranking pages against question two only. Assume question one already passes, because they rank. Find the ones with no liftable first paragraph.
  4. 4.Rewrite the opening of those pages so the answer is complete in the first sentence and stays true when pulled out of context.
  5. 5.Only then build new pages, and build them in the citable formats above rather than more of what already ranks.
  6. 6.Ignore, for now: chasing more top ten positions on pages that are already unquotable. It compounds the problem you have.
