What Is Generative Engine Optimization?

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of getting a brand named and cited inside the answers that AI assistants give. Instead of competing for a position in a list of links, you are competing to be the source the model reaches for when someone asks it a question. It has two halves: access, so the engines can crawl and parse what you publish, and evidence, so the claims on your pages are specific enough to be worth quoting.

The access half is engineering and it is fast. A single Disallow line in robots.txt can lock out the crawler that would have cited you, and no ranking report will mention it. A site that paints its content with JavaScript hands an answer engine an empty document, no matter how well it performs in Google.

The evidence half is editorial and it is slow. Assistants quote sources that state a number, name an entity, and answer the question in the first two lines. Content written to fill a keyword gap gives them nothing to lift.
