What Is a Description Tag and How Do You Write One?

A description tag, also called a meta description, is a short summary written into the code of a page. Search engines usually show it as the grey text under the blue link, so it is the sentence that decides whether somebody clicks your result or the one above it. It is not a ranking factor. It changes how many people arrive at the position you already hold. Write roughly 150 to 160 characters, put the whole point in the first 90 because phones cut the rest, answer the question first instead of introducing your company, add one concrete specific such as a city, a timeframe or a number of steps, and give every page its own. If you leave it blank the search engine writes one for you, usually from a fragment that reads like an error.
